Why Discipline, Not Motivation, Changed My Life at 47
I am the COO of the Global Investment division of one of Japan’s largest private companies.
I travel roughly 200,000 miles a year.
I still fit into my high school jeans.
And I am 58 years old.
That didn’t happen by accident.
It wasn’t genetics.
It wasn’t luck.
And it certainly wasn’t motivation.
The real turning point in my health — and ultimately my life — happened when I was 47 years old, sitting in a doctor’s office for what I thought was a routine annual health check.
The Wake-Up Call I Didn’t Want to Hear
During that checkup, my doctor told me I had a hiatal hernia — a condition where the top of the stomach pushes upward through the diaphragm into the chest cavity, allowing stomach acid to leak back up and cause painful heartburn.
It wasn’t life-threatening.
But it was a warning.
And I hated hearing it.
Not because the diagnosis was severe — but because it forced me to confront a truth I had been avoiding: if I didn’t get serious about my health, the trajectory wasn’t going to end well.
At that point in my career, everything else was working:
- My career
- My finances
- My professional reputation
My health, however, was quietly becoming the weak link.
That doctor’s visit was the moment I decided I would no longer leave my health to chance.

“Taken on my 58th birthday in November 2025. The result of structure and consistency applied over decades — not shortcuts.”
Why Motivation Was Never the Answer for Me
I’ve always had a comfortable relationship with discipline.
Maybe that comes from having Japanese parents. Growing up, I was constantly told I needed to be “more disciplined.” In their minds, discipline meant having more motivation and willpower.
But I’ve always been practical above all else.
Even at a young age, I knew motivation and willpower were unreliable. They come and go. They disappear under stress. And they are completely useless when life gets busy.
What I believed — and still believe — is this:
Discipline is not motivation.
Discipline is structure and consistency.
Once I accepted that, everything changed.
Breaking Discipline Down Into Something Usable
Instead of trying to “be disciplined,” I started doing something far more effective.
I broke everything down into clearly defined steps, and then I repeated those steps relentlessly.
Over time, that process became four simple principles:
- Get clear on your why
- Define your rules
- Know your numbers
- Track consistency
That’s it.
No hacks.
No magic bullets.
No extremes.
Just structure.
What surprised me most was realizing that this approach wasn’t unique to health. It’s exactly how success works in:
- Business
- Personal relationships
- Leadership
- Long-term performance
Success isn’t about doing a brilliant job once.
It’s about showing up and doing a good job for decades.

Applying the Same System to My Health
Once I saw that parallel, applying this framework to my health was a no-brainer.
Instead of chasing fitness trends or extreme diets, I did what I always do:
- Defined simple rules
- Measured what mattered
- Tracked consistency over time
The results weren’t immediate — but they were life-altering.
I didn’t just fix a health issue.
I rebuilt my physical foundation.

“Longevity is not about intensity. It’s about showing up year after year with discipline.”
What Discipline Gave Me at 58
Today, I live a rigorous life with the same physicality and energy I had as a much younger man.
The difference now is that I also have:
- More wisdom
- Greater social credibility
- Financial freedom
- Perspective
That combination is powerful.
This is the life I want for everyone — especially busy professionals who have worked relentlessly to build success but quietly fear losing their health in the process.
The Truth About Health and Longevity
Over the years, I became something of a hobbyist when it comes to health and longevity. I’ve read the research. I’ve followed the trends. I’ve tested ideas.
And when everything is stripped away, here’s the truth:
Health and longevity are mostly about common-sense lifestyle decisions applied consistently over time.
There are no shortcuts.
There are no magic bullets.
There are no hacks that replace consistency.
Basic behaviors compound — just like money, relationships, and careers.
Why I Created Discipline Monster
Discipline Monster exists for two reasons.
First, it’s my way of giving back — of being of service to people who want to stay healthy, strong, and capable while living demanding lives.
Second — and just as important — it’s because this journey is better with others.
The journey to stay consistent with lifestyle behaviors is the longest journey of all. I could do it alone, but that would be isolating.
I want to make this journey with:
- A team
- A tribe
- Fellow travelers who value structure over shortcuts
This community is as much for me as it is for you.

The Daily Health Routine for Busy Professionals
